Bollywood Actor Govinda Takes A Social Media Break After Tweet On Gurugram Violence
Popular Bollywood actor Govinda recently made headlines when he deactivated his Twitter (now X) account after a post he shared on the Gurugram violence sparked a heated debate and attracted the wrath of online trolls. The incident unfolded on Wednesday evening when the actor posted on Twitter about the alleged looting of Muslim shops in the city, igniting a firestorm of comments from netizens.
The post, which was quickly taken down, showcased a video clip depicting a violent mob looting shops and setting them ablaze. In response, Govinda expressed his dismay, saying, "What have we come down to? Shame on the people who call themselves Hindus and do such things. Aman aur shanti banaye, hum democracy hai, autocracy nahi!" His words resonated with many, but they also attracted a wave of criticism from trolls.
In addition to the contentious tweet, Govinda had liked another post connecting the ruling BJP to the unrest in Manipur , Kashmir, and Haryana . This action further fueled the trolls' ire, leading to intense online harassment directed at the actor.
It's worth noting that Govinda is not currently active in politics, but he previously served as a Congress Member of Parliament from 2004 to 2009. He represented Maharashtra's Mumbai North constituency, defeating BJP leader Ram Naik . However, his political career was marred by criticism for frequent absences from Parliament while simultaneously continuing with his successful film career. In 2008, he made the decision to leave politics, though he later expressed regret about that career shift.
The Gurugram violence, which erupted after clashes between two groups in Nuh, resulted in two home guards losing their lives and left around 20 policemen and several others injured. The incident was triggered when a religious procession passing through the district faced an attack, leading to a chain of violent events. Since then, six people have died and the unrest has spread to Gurugram and other places over the next couple of days, drawing nationwide attention and debate.
Faced with an onslaught of trolling and online abuse, Govinda decided to step away from social media for the time being. It is essential to remember that social media platforms can be double-edged swords, offering both a platform for free expression and a breeding ground for toxicity and harassment.
