Scarlett Johansson Eyes Major Role in ‘The Batman Part II’ Amid Catwoman Exit Reports

Scarlett Johansson is reportedly close to joining Gotham. According to multiple Hollywood trade outlets, the acclaimed actress is in early but progressing discussions to join Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II, the highly anticipated sequel to Robert Pattinson’s 2022 blockbuster. Johansson’s possible casting marks a major crossover moment, signalling her first step into the DC universe after defining Black Widow for Marvel for nearly a decade.

While details surrounding her role remain under wraps, industry insiders suggest she is being considered for a prominent and story-shaping character, potentially as a villain or a new moral counterbalance to Pattinson’s brooding Batman. Reports also clarify that she is not attached to Poison Ivy, despite fan speculation circulating online. Her involvement would be seen as a major win for the franchise as it continues shaping its noir-driven identity, separate from the main DCU slate.

Filming for The Batman Part II is expected to begin in spring 2026, with a planned release date of October 1, 2027. Reeves is reportedly deep into finalising the script, which aims to expand the psychological and atmospheric elements that made the first film stand out among modern superhero movies.

However, alongside Johansson’s possible entry, the Gotham universe may be preparing to lose one of its strongest characters. Reports indicate that Zoë Kravitz is not yet confirmed to return as Selina Kyle/Catwoman in the upcoming sequel. Despite her widely praised performance in the 2022 film, trade publications state that Kravitz does not currently have a contract for Part II, and no active negotiations have been reported. Several insiders suggest that creative choices by Reeves may be shifting the sequel’s narrative away from Selina Kyle’s arc.

Additionally, Kravitz’s personal schedule and other commitments may further complicate a return, making her absence increasingly likely. Fans have voiced disappointment online, given the chemistry and grounded relationship between Pattinson and Kravitz in the first film, one of the highlights appreciated by critics. The contrasting updates - Johansson possibly joining, Kravitz likely stepping away - suggest a notable tonal shift for The Batman Part II. Without Selina Kyle anchoring Bruce Wayne’s emotional journey, the sequel may lean deeper into themes of isolation, moral conflict, and psychological tension.

Meanwhile, Johansson’s potential arrival could introduce a formidable ally or adversary capable of reshaping Gotham’s power dynamics in unexpected ways. Reeves’ strict secrecy around her character only fuels further speculation.

As anticipation for the sequel builds, Warner Bros. is expected to make official casting announcements soon. Until then, fans are left imagining a Gotham that looks familiar but feels dramatically different.
