A drop in range doesn't always mean that the battery has developed a serious fault. Driving style, weather, air-conditioning use, tyre pressure and charging habits can all affect an EV's efficiency. Some everyday charging practices can also put unnecessary stress on the battery over time.
Here are five mistakes EV owners should try to avoid.
1. Don't Charge to 100% Every DayCharging to 100% isn't inherently harmful, and manufacturers may recommend a full charge for certain batteries or before a long journey. However, keeping a lithium-ion battery at a very high state of charge for extended periods can contribute to faster degradation.
For everyday driving, follow the charging range recommended by your vehicle manufacturer. Many EVs are designed for routine charging within a middle range, while the exact recommendation varies by battery chemistry and model.
Save a full charge for situations where you actually need the additional range.
2. Don't Plug In Immediately After a Long DriveAfter a long or demanding drive, the battery may be warm.
