Uber Launches Emission Savings Feature in Major Indian Cities
Uber rolled out a pioneering tool dubbed " Emission Savings " on Tuesday, aimed at empowering users to track their contribution to carbon dioxide reduction while riding in Uber Green vehicles. Uber Green, a service offering electric vehicles as an alternative to traditional internal combustion engine cars, has now integrated this feature into its operations.
This initiative, initially launched in Delhi-NCR, Mumbai , and Bengaluru , marks Uber's concerted effort to foster a shift towards sustainable transportation choices. By informing riders about their environmental impact and encouraging the adoption of low-emission lifestyles, Uber hopes to instigate behavioral changes conducive to a greener future.
Nitish Bhushan , Head of Central Operations at Uber India , emphasised the significance of understanding individual contributions to environmental preservation. He stated, “We understand that often it is tough for people to realise exactly how much they contribute to the environment by taking a single ride in a vehicle running on sustainable energy. The scale of that impact is an important tool to have at their fingertips in order for them to make more informed decisions around sustainability in their day-to-day lives. Emission Savings is designed to do just that.”
The newly introduced Emission Savings feature enables users to access an estimate of their carbon footprint reduction by tapping on the "Estimated CO2 saved" button within the app's Account section. Additionally, a graphical representation illustrates the equivalent magnitude of their CO2 savings.
Uber's methodology for calculating emission savings involves comparing the average emissions generated during an Uber Green trip to that of an equivalent distance covered with an Uber Premier ride. This approach allows users to gauge the environmental benefits derived from choosing sustainable transportation options.
