E20 Petrol Mandatory in India from April 1, 2026: What You Should Know

Newspoint
A major shift in India’s fuel policy is on the horizon, and it is set to reshape the way millions of people refuel their vehicles. Beginning April 1, 2026, petrol pumps across the country will supply ethanol blended fuel known as E20. Oil marketing companies have been instructed to ensure that this becomes the standard fuel available in all states and union territories.

Under the new rule, petrol will contain up to 20 percent ethanol and must meet a minimum Research Octane Number of 95. The directive was issued by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas through a notification released on February 17. It clearly states that fuel supplied nationwide must comply with the quality benchmarks set by the Bureau of Indian Standards. In specific cases, limited temporary relaxations may be granted to certain regions, but the overall goal is uniform implementation.

Understanding E20 fuel

E20 is a blend made up of 20 percent ethanol and 80 percent conventional petrol. Ethanol is a renewable biofuel produced mainly from crops such as sugarcane and corn. By increasing the share of ethanol in petrol, the government aims to cut down on crude oil imports and strengthen energy security. At the same time, this move creates additional demand for agricultural produce, offering farmers another source of income.

India had already achieved 10 percent ethanol blending ahead of schedule in June 2022. Encouraged by that success, the target was raised to 20 percent blending by the financial year 2025 to 2026. The nationwide rollout from April 2026 is part of this long term clean fuel roadmap.

Why RON 95 is significant

Research Octane Number indicates a fuel’s ability to resist knocking, which happens when fuel burns unevenly in the engine cylinder. Knocking can reduce engine efficiency and cause internal damage over time.

Ethanol naturally has a high octane rating of around 108. When mixed with petrol, it enhances the overall octane level of the fuel. Setting a minimum RON of 95 ensures better combustion stability, smoother engine performance, and improved protection for modern engines running on E20.

Economic and environmental impact

Officials say ethanol blending has already helped India save more than ₹1.40 lakh crore in foreign exchange since 2014 to 15 by lowering crude oil imports. As E20 becomes standard across the country, these savings are expected to grow further.

Apart from economic gains, the environmental benefits are also important. Ethanol burns cleaner than pure petrol and can help reduce certain harmful emissions. The transition to E20 marks another step toward sustainable mobility and reduced dependence on fossil fuels.

Impact on vehicles and motorists

Most vehicles manufactured after 2023 are designed to be E20 compatible. Owners of these vehicles are unlikely to face major issues while using the new fuel.

However, drivers of older cars and motorcycles may notice certain changes. Some users have reported a slight drop in mileage, typically between 3 and 7 percent. There have also been concerns about faster wear of certain engine components, as older fuel systems were not originally built to handle higher ethanol content. In some cases, this has led to starting issues or increased maintenance requirements.

To address these concerns, several automakers have started offering E20 conversion kits for older models. For example, Royal Enfield has introduced kits for select BS3 and BS4 motorcycles such as the Royal Enfield Bullet, Royal Enfield Classic, and Royal Enfield Thunderbird. These kits are designed to help engines adapt better to ethanol blended petrol and reduce the risk of component damage.

As the deadline approaches, vehicle owners are encouraged to check their vehicle manuals or consult manufacturers regarding E20 compatibility. The nationwide adoption of E20 represents a significant transformation in India’s fuel ecosystem. While it promises cleaner air, stronger farm support, and lower oil imports, motorists should stay informed to ensure a smooth and trouble free transition.
