The Aadhaar card is now a crucial identity document for every citizen of India, including children. However, parents need to be aware of mandatory update rules, especially for young children, to ensure their child’s Aadhaar remains valid. Ignoring these rules could result in the Aadhaar getting blocked, creating obstacles in education, examinations, and access to government schemes.

When issued for children below 5 years of age, Aadhaar is called ‘Baal Aadhaar’, printed in blue. Since biometric details like fingerprints and iris scans are not fully developed at that age, the Baal Aadhaar only includes a child’s photograph, name, and address. But this Aadhaar is not permanent and requires compulsory updates at specific milestones.

According to the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the first biometric update must be done once the child turns 5 years old. Parents should complete this before the child turns 7. Failure to update leads to the Aadhaar becoming invalid. Reports suggest that nearly 17 crore Aadhaar updates for children are still pending across India.

A second biometric update becomes mandatory when the child reaches the age of 15. Missing this step can again make the Aadhaar invalid, which could affect school admissions, applications for scholarships, board examinations, and eligibility for welfare schemes.

The good news is that biometric updates for children aged 5–7 years are free of cost. However, if parents delay beyond this period, they will have to pay a fee of ₹100. Updates can be completed at any Aadhaar Seva Kendra or authorised enrolment centre.

Documents required include the child’s birth certificate or school ID card, along with one of the parent’s Aadhaar cards. After verification, the child’s biometrics- fingerprints, iris scans, and photo are updated.

To check whether your child’s Aadhaar is active and valid, parents can visit the UIDAI website and click on ‘Check Aadhaar Status’. Entering the Aadhaar number or Enrollment ID along with the captcha will confirm the update status.

Ensuring timely updates will help parents safeguard their child’s Aadhaar validity and avoid unnecessary hurdles in the future.
