Is India Witnessing Its First Sunday Budget? The February 1 Shift Explained
India is set to mark a historic shift in its fiscal calendar as the Union Budget for 2026–27 will be presented on a Sunday for the first time. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is scheduled to table the Budget in the Lok Sabha at 11 am on February 1. The development signals how long-standing Budget traditions have gradually adapted to modern administrative and economic needs, while maintaining the constitutional importance of the annual financial statement.
A First-Ever Sunday Budget In India
The Union Budget has traditionally been presented only on working days, reflecting established parliamentary conventions. The February 1, 2026 presentation breaks this long-standing practice, making it the first Sunday Budget in India’s fiscal history. Despite being a weekend, Parliament will convene as scheduled, underlining the priority given to the Budget session. The Finance Minister’s speech will follow the standard format and timing, ensuring continuity in procedure even as the date sets a new precedent. How The 1999 Budget Changed Long-Held Practices
Although India has never witnessed a Sunday Budget before, a notable moment occurred in 1999 when February 28 fell on a Sunday. Instead of presenting the Budget on a holiday, it was moved to February 27, a Saturday. That Budget also introduced a significant reform by shifting the presentation time from evening to 11 am. Until then, evening presentations were followed due to colonial-era considerations. The change helped make Budget Day more accessible to the public and has remained the standard ever since. You may also like
