7th Pay Commission: Central Government Employees Await July 2026 DA Hike Announcement
Central government employees and pensioners are still waiting for an official announcement on the July 2026 increase in dearness allowance (DA) and dearness relief (DR). Despite expectations following recent Cabinet meetings and festive-season bonus announcements, the Centre has not confirmed the revised rates, arrears or payment schedule.
The Union Cabinet meeting held on October 14, 2026, did not bring any announcement regarding the DA hike. Instead, the government approved a performance-linked bonus (PLB) for eligible Railway employees. Two days later, on October 16, the Centre announced a non-performance-linked bonus for central government employees, but the DA and DR revision remained pending.
No announcement was made ahead of Dussehra, celebrated on October 20, either. Employees and pensioners are therefore continuing to wait for official confirmation of the next revision.
What Are DA and DR, and Why Are They Revised?Dearness allowance is provided to central government employees to help them manage rising living costs caused by inflation. Pensioners receive a corresponding benefit known as dearness relief. Both payments are calculated as a percentage of basic salary or pension.
The government generally reviews DA and DR twice a year, with revisions effective from January 1 and July 1. The January increase is usually announced in March or April, while the July revision is commonly announced around October. As announcements may come after the effective date, eligible employees and pensioners can receive arrears for the intervening period.
On April 18, 2026, the Union Cabinet approved a 2-percentage-point increase in DA and DR, taking the rates from 58% to 60% of basic pay or pension with effect from January 1, 2026. The revision followed the applicable formula linked to the recommendations of the 7th Central Pay Commission.
How Is the DA Hike Calculated? The calculation of dearness allowance is linked to the All-India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW), released by the Labour Bureau. The index measures changes in retail prices relevant to industrial workers and is used to determine DA under the applicable calculation formula.
In August 2026, the AICPI-IW increased by 1.2 points to 154.4. The year-on-year inflation rate based on the index reached 4.96%, compared with 3.16% in August 2025.
Following the release of the latest index figures, central government employees and pensioners have been awaiting the government’s decision on the July 2026 DA and DR revision. However, the final increase cannot be confirmed until an official announcement is issued.
When Were July DA Hikes Announced in Previous Years?Previous announcements show that the government does not follow one fixed date for declaring the July DA revision. Over the past five years, the announcements have generally been made between late September and October.
According to Press Information Bureau (PIB) releases, the July DA increases were announced on the following dates:
Year Announcement date| 2025 | October 1 |
| 2024 | October 16 |
| 2023 | October 18 |
| 2022 | September 28 |
| 2021 | October 21 |
These dates provide a record of earlier announcements but do not establish when the July 2026 revision will be declared.
The Centre has not yet confirmed the July 2026 DA and DR increase. Employees and pensioners should look for an official Cabinet decision or government notification specifying the revised rates, effective date and arrears payment arrangements.
Until the government releases that information, the amount of the expected increase and the date on which payments may be made remain unconfirmed.
