The new rules, notified under the Aadhaar (Enrolment and Update) First Amendment Regulations, 2026, clearly spell out which documents are accepted for each type of correction. Whether you have changed your name after marriage, shifted to a new home or need to correct your date of birth, the updated list makes the process easier to understand.

What Details Can Be Updated in Aadhaar?

Existing Aadhaar holders can submit documents under four categories:
  • Proof of Identity (POI)
  • Proof of Address (POA)
  • Proof of Relationship (POR)
  • Proof of Date of Birth (PDB)
Each document is accepted only for specific purposes, so it is important to know which one fits your update request.

Passport: The Most Powerful Single Document

A valid Indian passport remains the most versatile document for Aadhaar updates. It can be used as proof of:
  • Identity
  • Address
  • Relationship
  • Date of Birth
If you hold a passport, it can often cover all your update requirements with just one document.

Other Commonly Accepted Documents

Ration Card or e-Ration Card

Accepted as proof of identity, address and relationship. It is not valid for date of birth updates.

Voter ID or e-Voter ID

Useful for identity and address proof, but not accepted for relationship or date of birth.

Driving Licence

Accepted only as proof of identity under the revised rules.

Government Service ID Cards

Photo identity cards issued by central and state governments, PSUs and statutory bodies may be used for identity, address and date of birth proof in specified cases.

NREGA/MGNREGA Job Card

Can serve as proof of identity, address and relationship.

Kisan Photo Passbook

Accepted for both identity and address proof.

Documents Accepted for Name Change After Marriage or Divorce

The new rules also simplify Aadhaar updates after major life events.

Marriage Certificate

A government-issued marriage certificate can be used to update name and related details. If the certificate does not contain a photograph, an old-name photo ID must also be submitted.

Divorce Decree

A court-issued divorce order can be used for identity-related updates. If there is no photograph, an old-name identity document will be required.

Documents Accepted for Date of Birth Correction

To update your date of birth, UIDAI accepts:
  • Birth certificate
  • Valid Indian passport
  • School or university certificates and marksheets
  • Pension-related documents
  • Certain government-issued ID cards
These documents must contain a clearly mentioned date of birth.

Documents Accepted for Address Update

Aadhaar holders can use a wide range of documents to update their address, including:
  • Bank passbook
  • Post office passbook
  • Recent bank statement
  • Credit card statement
  • Electricity bill
  • Water bill
  • Mobile, landline or broadband bill
  • Gas bill
  • Property tax receipt
  • Registered rent or lease agreement
  • Registered sale deed
  • Insurance policy
  • Government accommodation allotment letter
Most utility bills should be recent, generally not older than three months.

Special Provisions Included in New Rules

The updated regulations also provide document support for:
  • Transgender persons
  • Legal guardianship cases
  • Residents of shelter homes
  • Prison inmates
  • Address updates through family declaration
For transgender applicants, the identity certificate issued under the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019 is accepted for both name and gender changes.

Important Conditions to Keep in Mind

Before submitting any document, ensure that:
  • The document is valid on the date of submission.
  • It belongs to the applicant.
  • All details are clearly readable and verifiable.
  • The name matches across supporting documents.
  • The issuing authority has not declared the document invalid.

Why These New Rules Matter

The revised Aadhaar update rules remove much of the uncertainty people face while making corrections. Instead of guessing which document may be accepted, applicants now have a clear and detailed reference list.

This is especially useful for those updating Aadhaar after marriage, relocation, legal changes or corrections to personal information.
