EPFO Simplifies Process to Remove Wrong Member IDs Linked to UAN

Newspoint
In a move that brings relief to many employees, the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation has made it easier to remove incorrect Member IDs linked to a Universal Account Number. This update is especially helpful for individuals who discovered that an account was linked to their UAN by mistake or without their knowledge.

With this improved system, EPF members can now take action directly through the online portal and correct such errors without unnecessary delays.

Why This Change Matters

Incorrect Member IDs can create confusion while checking balances, transferring funds, or filing claims. In some cases, employees may not even be aware that an extra ID has been linked to their account.

To address these issues, EPFO has continued and streamlined the facility to delete or unlink such IDs. A user-friendly guide has also been introduced to help members understand the process clearly.

However, the organisation has set certain conditions. A Member ID cannot be removed if a withdrawal claim has already been submitted, if a claim is still pending, or if more than six contributions have been made to that account.

How the Request Process Works

The process begins on the EPFO Member Portal, where the member submits a request to remove the incorrect ID. Once submitted, the request is sent to the employer for verification.

If the employer approves the request, the ID is removed at the company level
If the employer rejects the request or does not respond within two weeks, the case is forwarded to the regional EPFO office

The regional office then reviews the case and takes the final decision after proper verification.

Step-by-Step Guide to Remove Member ID

Members can follow these simple steps to initiate the process:

  • Log in to the EPFO Member Portal using your UAN and password
  • Go to the “View” section and click on “Service History”
  • A list of all Member IDs linked to your UAN will appear, along with company details and employment dates
  • Select the incorrect ID and click on the “De-link” option
  • The system will check if the request meets the eligibility criteria

If there are no restrictions, the request will move forward. In case of pending claims or other issues, the system will display an error message.

What Is UAN

The Universal Account Number is a unique 12-digit number assigned to employees under the EPF system. It acts as a single reference point that links multiple Member IDs, allowing users to manage all their provident fund accounts in one place.

A Step Towards Better Transparency

This update is part of EPFO’s efforts to make its services more transparent and user-friendly. By allowing members to correct errors easily, it reduces complications in account management and speeds up processes like withdrawals and transfers.

For millions of EPF subscribers, this change means greater control over their accounts and a smoother overall experience when dealing with their savings.
