BERLIN: German companies are exploring investment opportunities in India in precision engineering, aerospace, defence and shipbuilding, besides healthcare, pharmaceuticals and research and development, commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal said, pointing to growing business interest as European firms look to diversify manufacturing and supply chains.

Talking to reporters during his visit to Germany and The Netherlands with a delegation of Indian businesses and startups to explore opportunities in trade, investment and industrial cooperation, Goyal said German companies had publicly announced investments worth $7.4 billion in India with some of these already materialising.

More than 2,000 German companies currently operate in India, while cumulative German FDI equity inflows stood at $15.6 billion between April 2000 and March 2026.

“With all the regulatory overhang that they (EU) are creating upon themselves, European manufacturing will have to look for trusted partner countries where many of the things that are becoming very expensive in Europe can be produced. So I see tremendous potential for India and huge job creation in India,” Goyal said.

He said India could also emerge as an important export base for automobiles.
