If the landlord has an LPG connection, can tenants get a separate LPG connection? Learn the rules

Newspoint

People living in rented houses often wonder if they can obtain a separate LPG gas connection in their own name, even though the landlord already has a gas connection at the same address? If you're facing this situation, it's important to understand the LPG rules.

Can I get a second gas connection at the same address?
According to Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) rules, eligibility for an LPG connection is primarily related to the "household unit" and its cooking arrangements.

According to the rules, both the landlord and tenant can have separate LPG connections at the same address, provided they live as separate households and have separate kitchens.

What is the 'One Family, One Domestic LPG Connection' rule?
As a general rule, only one LPG connection is allowed per household unit. A household typically consists of a husband, wife, unmarried children, and parents, who live together and share a common kitchen.

This means that if you rent a portion of a house but share a kitchen with the landlord, simply living in a different room or floor won't entitle you to a separate gas connection.

Why is it important to have a separate kitchen?
Shared kitchen: If the landlord and tenant cook in the same kitchen, the tenant may have difficulty getting a separate connection.

Independent kitchens: If the landlord and tenant have separate kitchens (e.g., the landlord has a separate kitchen and kitchen on the first floor and the tenant has a separate kitchen on the second floor), the tenant can apply to an authorized LPG distributor for a separate LPG connection in their own name. However, final approval is granted only after verification and documentation by oil marketing companies.

Required Documents

While applying for a new connection, you may need to submit some important documents, such as:

Identity card

Address proof (like rent agreement etc.)

KYC details

Before applying, please confirm the correct list of required documents from your nearest or authorized LPG distributor, so that your application is not rejected.

Opt for a Double Bottle Connection (DBC):

If you need two cylinders on a single connection, you should opt for a Double Bottle Connection (DBC) instead of getting a new connection. This allows you to have two cylinders under a single registered LPG connection, which is a completely different process than getting two separate connections.
