Income Tax Refund Delayed? Steps to Check Status and Get Your Money

After filing and e-verifying your Income Tax Return (ITR), getting the refund credited to your bank account is often the next thing taxpayers wait for. While refunds are generally processed within a few weeks after e-verification, delays can happen because of incorrect bank details, validation issues or discrepancies in the return.

If you claimed a refund before July 31 but the amount has not reached your bank account, here are the key steps you can take.

Check Your Refund Status

The first step is to find out what has actually happened to your refund.

Log in to the Income Tax e-filing portal and go to e-File > Income Tax Returns > View Filed Returns. Select the relevant assessment year and choose View Details.

The portal may show statuses such as Refund Issued, Refund Partially Adjusted, Refund Adjusted, Refund Fully Adjusted or Refund Failed.

A message saying that the refund has been processed does not necessarily mean the money has already been credited to your account.

Check Your Bank Account Details

If the portal shows that a refund has been issued but you have not received the money, check the bank account details linked to your ITR.

Your account must be valid and successfully validated on the e-filing portal. If required, you can add a bank account and complete the validation process through the portal.

Find Out Why the Refund Failed

A refund can fail for several reasons. These may include an unverified bank account, a mismatch in the account holder's name, an incorrect IFSC code or a closed bank account.

Issues with the PAN-bank account linkage or Aadhaar-related requirements may also affect the refund process in certain cases.

Revalidate Your Bank Account

Go to the My Bank Account section on the e-filing portal and check whether your account has been successfully validated.

If an earlier validation attempt failed, correct the relevant details and try again. Check the account number, name, PAN-bank linkage and whether the account is active.

Once the bank account is successfully validated, you can move to the next step if your refund has already failed.

Submit a Refund Reissue Request

If your refund has failed, you may request a reissue after validating your bank account.

Log in to the portal and go to Services > Refund Reissue. Create a new request, select the relevant refund record and choose the validated bank account.

Complete the required e-verification process. Once submitted, you should receive a transaction ID and confirmation through your registered contact details.

Check If Your Refund Was Adjusted

Sometimes, the refund amount may be adjusted against an outstanding tax demand or other liability instead of being credited directly to your bank account.

Therefore, check the exact refund status on the portal and look for any communication from the Income Tax Department before assuming that the refund has been delayed.

What To Do Next

A missing refund does not always mean that the money is lost. Start by checking the refund status, then verify your bank account and correct any discrepancies.

If the status says Refund Failed, validate your bank account and submit a refund reissue request. If the amount has been adjusted, check the details of the outstanding demand or departmental communication to understand what happened to the refund.
