Consumers using smaller LPG cylinders will have to pay slightly more following the latest monthly price revision. The price of the 5 kg market-price LPG cylinder, popularly known as the Chotu cylinder, has been increased by Rs 2.
With the latest revision taking effect from September 1, the Chotu LPG cylinder price has moved up from Rs 762 to Rs 764. The smaller cylinder is designed to offer a more flexible option for consumers with limited gas requirements.
It can also be useful for people who do not have proof of a local residential address. A new connection for the 5 kg cylinder can be obtained by submitting an identity document, without the need to arrange a regular domestic gas connection.
The cylinder is available through distributors, retail outlets and selected grocery stores and supermarkets. This wider availability is intended to make access easier for customers who need a smaller and more portable cooking gas option.
Customers can also return the cylinder after use and receive Rs 500 back, subject to the applicable terms. The latest 5 kg gas cylinder price revision is relatively small, but it adds to the cost for regular users of the compact cylinder.
These cylinders are widely used by hotels, restaurants and other commercial establishments. The increase follows two consecutive monthly reductions in commercial LPG prices.
The rate had been cut by Rs 192 on August 1 and by Rs 183.50 on July 1. Those reductions came after commercial LPG prices had climbed sharply earlier in the year amid disruption and volatility in global energy markets.
The commercial LPG cylinder price had surged significantly between February and June. During that period, the price of the 19 kg cylinder rose from Rs 1,740.50 to Rs 3,113.50 before subsequent reductions brought the rate down.
The domestic LPG rate was last raised by Rs 29 on June 7. Earlier in March, prices had also increased by Rs 60 as international energy markets came under pressure and supply concerns intensified.
LPG rates are generally revised on the first day of every month. The final retail price can vary between states because of local taxes, including Value Added Tax.
For households, the unchanged domestic rate provides some relief in the latest revision cycle. However, users of the Chotu cylinder and businesses dependent on commercial cylinders will see a modest increase in their monthly fuel expenses.
