Seeing a PF deduction on your salary slip may make you feel that your retirement savings are safely reaching your EPF account. But a salary deduction alone does not confirm that the money has been deposited and updated in your passbook.

Employees should regularly check their EPF passbook to track contributions, verify deposits and identify any missing entries. Here is what you need to know about PF deposits, passbook updates and the steps to take if your contribution is not showing.

Is Your PF Actually Being Deposited?

Every month, a portion of an employee’s salary is contributed towards the Employees’ Provident Fund. The employer also makes a contribution as per the applicable EPF rules.

Your salary slip usually shows the employee’s PF deduction. However, the passbook is the place to check whether the contribution has been recorded in your EPF account.

The EPF passbook provides details such as:

  • Employee’s PF contribution
  • Employer’s PF contribution
  • Monthly deposit entries
  • PF withdrawals, where applicable
  • Available account balance
Checking these details regularly can help you keep track of your retirement savings and spot possible discrepancies.

Why PF May Not Show Immediately After Salary Credit

One common mistake employees make is checking their EPF passbook as soon as their salary arrives and assuming something is wrong if the latest contribution is missing.

PF entries may not appear immediately after salary credit.

Employers generally have to deposit the employee’s and employer’s PF contributions within the prescribed deadline. The usual statutory due date is the 15th of the following month.

For example, a contribution for September may be deposited by 15 October, subject to the applicable rules and circumstances. The passbook may take additional time to reflect the transaction.

This means a missing entry immediately after salary credit does not necessarily indicate that your PF has not been deposited.

A short delay in the passbook update may be normal. However, employees should not ignore a contribution that remains missing for an extended period.

When Should You Worry About a Missing PF Entry?

A delayed entry is not always a reason for concern. But if contributions for later months are visible while an earlier month is still missing, it is worth investigating.

For instance, if your passbook shows contributions for November and December but the October contribution is absent, check the records carefully.

You should compare:

  1. The PF deduction shown on your salary slip.
  2. The contribution entry in your EPF passbook.
  3. The month for which the contribution was made.
  4. The employee and employer contribution amounts.
This comparison can help you identify whether the issue is a normal update delay or a possible mismatch in the records.

How to Check Your EPF Passbook Online

Employees can view their PF contribution details through the EPFO’s official Member Passbook service.

Step 1: Visit the EPFO Member Passbook service

Open the official EPFO Member Passbook website and enter your UAN and the required login details.

Step 2: Log in to your account

After successful login, you can access your PF account information.

Step 3: Select the correct Member ID

If you have worked for more than one company, several Member IDs may be linked to your UAN.

Select the Member ID belonging to the company and employment period you want to check.

Step 4: Review your contribution entries

The passbook will show the available contribution records, including employee and employer deposits, withdrawals and balance details, wherever applicable.

Make sure you check the correct month and employer before concluding that a PF contribution is missing.

Can You Check PF Through UMANG?

Yes, EPFO services are also available through the UMANG app. Depending on the service and account access, employees can use the app to view relevant PF information.

The Passbook Lite facility is another option for accessing contribution and balance details.

Employees should use official EPFO services and ensure that they enter their login details only on trusted platforms.

What to Do If PF Is Deducted But Not Deposited

If your salary slip shows a PF deduction but the amount is still not reflected in your passbook after a reasonable period, take the following steps.

1. Compare your salary slip and passbook

Check the deduction amount, contribution month and the entries available in your EPF account.

2. Contact HR or Payroll

Speak to your company’s HR or Payroll team and ask whether the PF contribution for the relevant month has been deposited.

You can request the payment details or confirmation of the contribution, if available.

3. Check for an incorrect Member ID

If you have changed jobs, make sure you are checking the correct Member ID linked to your UAN. Contributions may be recorded under a different employment account.

4. Raise a complaint with EPFO

If the issue continues and the employer does not resolve it, you can raise a grievance through the EPFO’s official grievance mechanism.

The employer is responsible for depositing the applicable PF contributions within the prescribed timelines after deducting the employee’s share.

Why Regular PF Checks Matter

EPF is an important part of many employees’ long-term savings. A missing contribution can affect the accuracy of your account records and may need to be corrected.

Checking your passbook periodically helps you:

  • Track monthly PF deposits.
  • Confirm employer and employee contributions.
  • Identify missing or incorrect entries.
  • Keep employment-wise records organised.
  • Raise issues before they remain unresolved for too long.
A PF deduction on your salary slip does not by itself confirm that the amount has been updated in your EPF account. Check your passbook regularly, allow time for normal processing and contact HR or EPFO if a contribution remains missing.
