PF Withdrawal: Check these 6 things in EPFO before withdrawing PF; even a small mistake could get your money stuck

Newspoint

For millions of working employees, the Employee Provident Fund (EPF) is an essential foundation for long-term savings. However, incorrect or inconsistent information in EPFO records can pose a problem when filing an online claim to withdraw funds from this account in times of need. Therefore, it is beneficial to check the necessary details in your UAN account before filing a claim.

1. Aadhaar details:

Check that the personal information in the Aadhaar and EPFO records linked to the UAN is correct. Pay special attention to details like name and date of birth.

2. PAN details: Check whether the PAN number registered in UAN is correct and the name on it matches with the EPFO records.

3. Bank account and IFSC: It is crucial that the account number and IFSC code for the account to which you want to deposit your PF amount are correct. Also, ensure that the relevant bank account is active.

4. Name:

If there is any discrepancy in the spelling of the name in EPFO, Aadhaar and PAN, it would be better to correct it first.

5. Date of Birth: Check if the date of birth entered in the UAN is correct. This is an important detail for member identification and EPFO records.

6. Job Dates: Also check whether the joining date and exit date are entered correctly or not.

Profile correction now easier

EPFO had simplified the process of correcting information in member profiles in January 2025. Members whose UAN is already verified through Aadhaar can update various details such as name, date of birth, gender, nationality, parents' names, marital status and date of joining and leaving the job in eligible cases. However, in some cases of UANs obtained before October 1, 2017, employer verification may be required.

In April 2025, the EPFO made another important change. The requirement for employer approval after bank verification to link bank account details to UAN was removed. Additionally, the requirement to upload a copy of a check or verified bank passbook when filing an online claim has also been removed.

Don't share your OTP or UAN password with anyone.

Special caution is needed when seeking help from an agent or stranger to withdraw PF. The EPFO itself warns members not to share their UAN, password, PAN, Aadhaar, bank account details, or OTP with anyone. The official portal also clarifies that the EPFO does not ask for such sensitive information over the phone, messages, or social media.

Therefore, instead of rushing to withdraw your PF, it may be beneficial to take a few minutes to check all the information before filing your claim. If there are any errors in the details, it's best to correct them first and then file your claim online.
