Sharing UPI ID: Can It Put Your Bank Account at Risk? Know the Facts
UPI has made sending and receiving money incredibly simple. But this convenience has also created confusion around security. One common question is: Can a fraudster empty your bank account if they only know your UPI ID?
The simple answer is no. Knowing your UPI ID alone does not allow anyone to directly withdraw money from your bank account. However, fraudsters can use your UPI ID as the first step in a scam and trick you into authorising a payment yourself.
The important thing to remember is that your UPI PIN is private. It is generally required to authorise payments from your account. Never disclose it to anyone, even if the person claims to be calling from your bank, UPI app or customer support.
They may then send a payment request to your UPI app. If you approve it without checking the details, you could unknowingly authorise a payment from your own bank account.
If someone says you need to enter your UPI PIN to receive a refund, accept money or get a reward, stop immediately. Entering your PIN to approve a payment request can result in money being debited from your account.
Before approving anything, carefully read the amount, recipient details and message displayed on your UPI app.
Don't scan a QR code blindly. Check what appears on your screen and understand whether you are receiving money or authorising a payment.
