UPI has made sending and receiving money incredibly simple. But this convenience has also created confusion around security. One common question is: Can a fraudster empty your bank account if they only know your UPI ID?The simple answer is no. Knowing your UPI ID alone does not allow anyone to directly withdraw money from your bank account. However, fraudsters can use your UPI ID as the first step in a scam and trick you into authorising a payment yourself. Is sharing your UPI ID safe?A UPI ID is primarily meant for sending and receiving payments, so sharing it is not automatically risky. Someone can use your UPI ID to transfer money to you.The important thing to remember is that your UPI PIN is private. It is generally required to authorise payments from your account. Never disclose it to anyone, even if the person claims to be calling from your bank, UPI app or customer support. How do fraudsters misuse a UPI ID?The scam often starts with a seemingly harmless message or phone call. A fraudster may say they are sending you a refund, have accidentally transferred money to you, or want to help you receive a payment. They may then send a payment request to your UPI app. If you approve it without checking the details, you could unknowingly authorise a payment from your own bank account.Remember: receiving money does not require your UPI PINThis is one of the most important UPI safety rules. If someone says you need to enter your UPI PIN to receive a refund, accept money or get a reward, stop immediately. Entering your PIN to approve a payment request can result in money being debited from your account. Before approving anything, carefully read the amount, recipient details and message displayed on your UPI app.Be careful with QR codes tooFraudsters may also send a QR code and claim that scanning it will help you receive a refund, reward or payment.Don't scan a QR code blindly. Check what appears on your screen and understand whether you are receiving money or authorising a payment.Your UPI ID is not the same as your UPI PIN. Knowing the ID alone does not give a fraudster direct access to your bank balance. The bigger danger is being manipulated into approving a payment or revealing confidential credentials.Never share your UPI PIN, never approve an unknown payment request and always read the transaction details before clicking or scanning anything.
