Patna : Unidentified thieves allegedly stole at least 10 ancient brass and metal idols from Jai Narayan Ji temple in Bhagwan Bazaar police station area of Saran district on Friday night, triggering anger among devotees.

The theft came to light on Saturday morning when the priest arrived for daily rituals and found several idols and puja materials missing. The temple caretaker subsequently informed the police.

Caretaker Brijmohan Prasad said regular worship had been conducted at the temple for years without any such incident. He alleged the thieves targeted valuable metal idols, leaving behind clay idols and other statues.

Police suspect the thieves took advantage of the temple being unlocked on Dhanteras . Devotees expressed resentment, saying the theft had hurt their religious sentiments.

Bhagwan Bazaar SHO Suraj Kumar reached the spot with a police team, inspected the premises and collected evidence. “Police are examining CCTV footage from cameras installed in nearby areas to identify those involved. Efforts are underway to recover the stolen idols and arrest the culprits,” he said.

Kumar said the stolen idols were made of brass and other metals. “The thieves stole 8-10 idols, while the main idol in the sanctum sanctorum was left untouched,” he added.
