41-Year-Old Kills Wife, Prepares Meal For Children, Then Dials 100
In the early hours of Thursday, a 41-year-old resident of Behala committed a heinous act by strangling his 28-year-old wife. Kartick Das carried out the crime at approximately 1 am, after which he diligently covered the lifeless body. Astonishingly, he proceeded to complete household chores, rising early to prepare breakfast for their daughter and son. Kartick then sent the children off to their tuition classes before finally dialing emergency services (100) around 9.30 am to confess to the murder.
Providing a chilling account to the police, Kartick informed them that he would be awaiting their arrival at his rented accommodation near Mahabirtala and New Alipore. By the time law enforcement reached the scene, Kartick had efficiently packed the children's belongings and arranged for his mother-in-law to collect them from their classes later in the day.
Upon arrival, the police discovered Kartick calmly seated beside the lifeless body of his wife, Samapti. During questioning, he reiterated his admission of guilt, confessing to the murder once again. Police reports indicate that Kartick managed a small grocery shop and a meat shop. The couple frequently engaged in disputes, primarily stemming from Kartick's suspicions of his wife having an extramarital affair. The fatal altercation occurred following a late-night argument on Wednesday, during which Kartick, in a fit of rage, strangled Samapti. He later informed the children that their mother had fallen suddenly ill and was sleeping.
Despite Kartick claiming to have called his mother-in-law to pick up the children from their tuition, police harbor suspicions that he may have personally dropped them off at their grandmother's residence. An officer stated, "We are also probing if the accused had sent away the children to some other place before attacking his wife. We will check if he had destroyed any evidence at night, before calling police."
“ASI Amal Ghosh from the Lalbazar control room alerted us about a murder at a rented apartment in Behala. When we reached the address, we found Kartick had strangled his wife. We sent the body to hospital and arrested the accused. A murder case has been registered,” said DC (Behala) Saumya Roy.
A relative of Samapti disclosed to TOI that Kartick had a history of tormenting his wife, prompting some family members to intervene. The police intend to record statements from neighbors and the landlord as part of their investigation.
