After Arunachal, Karnataka's 18% fall second steepest in SIR deletions

BENGALURU: Karnataka has lost a bigger share of its voters in the SIR than all but one of the 24 states and Union territories that have published final rolls, and Bengaluru is the main reason. Its electorate shrank 17.9%, behind only Arunachal at 22% and ahead of Gujarat and UP (about 13% each) and Chhattisgarh (12%).

Within Karnataka, Bengaluru's roll fell 43%, far steeper than Chennai's 11.5% in TN.

The state's final roll, published on Oct 27, lists 4.5 crore voters, down from 5.5 cr before the revision, a net fall of 99.3 lakh. Across the 24 states and UTs, the electorate contracted by 10%, or about 7 cr. Bengaluru's 28 assembly constituencies now have 59 lakh voters, against 1.04cr before SIR, a drop of 44.8 lakh. The city alone accounts for roughly 45% of the state's net decline.

The draft roll had 57 lakh voters; 2.7 lakh were added later, while 65,881 names were deleted during claims and objections. The comparison uses final rolls, not draft lists, which can show larger reductions before claims, objections and fresh enrolments. The distinction matters when states are at different stages of the exercise.
