Alert on-duty docs, nurses, other staff rescue 36 infants from burning ward
Amravati: Doctors, nurses and other on-duty staff rescued 36 infants after a fire broke out at the Sick Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) of District Women's Hospital, locally known as Dufferin Hospital, at around 3.30am on Monday in Amravati. Three infants died due to suffocation in the tragic incident.
The SNCU at the hospital has three wings, and nine infants were in the wing where the fire started. A total of 30 infants were under treatment at the other two wings of the SNCU, hospital officials said.
Hospital in charge Dr Preeti Ingle told TOI nurse Lalita Kasdekar was present in the ward when the fire broke out. "She raised an alarm and with the help of other nurses — Madhuri Dhumale, Akash Chavan, Jayashri Dhurve, Rita Dale— rescued the infants from this wing," Dr Ingle informed.
As the fire spread, the infants on the beds on either side of the ventilator died of suffocation, Dr Ingle said. "One of our doctors, Hisham Inamdar, got unconscious due to the smoke while entering the ward for the second time to rescue the infants. The other on-duty doctor Minal Awaghad also assisted in the rescue operation," Dr Ingle said.
