Congress to replace Warring as Punjab chief; Singla frontrunner for post
Chandigarh: The Congress high command has decided to replace Amrinder Singh Raja Warring as president of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC), exactly two months after retaining him in the post and with less than five months to go for the assembly election.
Sources said the party has conveyed the decision to Warring and that he has offered to resign. Vijay Inder Singla , Pargat Singh, Rana KP Singh and Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria are among those being considered by the high command to replace him, say sources, with Singla emerging as a frontrunner.
The decision to replace Warring — with elections knocking on the door — was taken on the basis of organisational feedback gathered by newly appointed Punjab affairs in charge Sachin Pilot , say sources.
Since taking charge on Sept 5, Pilot has held discussions with senior office-bearers of the state unit as part of the party’s assessment of the organisation ahead of the 2027 assembly elections. According to sources, the feedback gathered during these interactions formed part of a report submitted by Pilot to the party high command.
The central Congress leadership — including Rahul Gandhi , Mallikarjun Kharge , K C Venugopal and Pilot — discussed and approved the change in state leadership, say sources.
Sources said the party is looking for someone who can work with different factions of the state unit. Differences in Punjab Congress erupted into the open after Warring was retained as PCC chief on July 1. Supporters of former CM Charanjit Singh Channi , along with Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Pargat Singh and Rana Gurjeet Singh, pressed the high command for a change in the state leadership. A formal announcement on Warring’s successor is expected shortly.
