Delta Beach attracts tourists but remains a dangerous coastal spot

Newspoint

Malpe: Delta Beach at Kodi Bengre, located within the Malpe Police Station limits of Kundapur Assembly constituency, is gaining popularity among tourists for its scenic beauty. However, local residents have warned that the sea in the area is highly dangerous and has been linked to several accidents over the years.

The beach witnessed a boat tragedy in January in which three people lost their lives. More recently, a young man from Bengaluru drowned after entering the water.

Delta Beach is situated at the confluence of the Arabian Sea, the Swarna River and the Sita River. The unique meeting point of the three water bodies, along with rows of coconut trees and a peaceful atmosphere, has made it a popular destination for nature lovers.

Initially, the beach was mostly visited by engineering and medical students from Manipal. Locals say the name "Delta Beach" was given by these students. As the location gained popularity, tourists from Bengaluru, Mysuru, Hassan and even other states began visiting in large numbers. People from Udupi, Kundapur and Mangaluru also frequent the beach.

Strong currents pose risks

Local residents say the area where the rivers meet the sea experiences strong waves and unpredictable water currents. Visitors often enter the water without understanding the risks involved.

Fishermen familiar with the area say that underwater currents and whirlpools can form unexpectedly, making the sea dangerous even for experienced swimmers. Such conditions can quickly lead to accidents.

Calls for stronger safety measures

Residents have urged the district administration to take additional steps to improve safety at the beach. They say accidents have been occurring regularly over the past several years and many tourists are unaware of the dangers.

Ramesh S. Thingalaya, a local resident, said visitors often ignore warnings and enter the water despite being advised about the risks.

According to Naveen Kundar, president of the Durga Parameshwari Temple at Kodi Bengre, the beach becomes crowded during weekends, with around 100 cars and many other vehicles arriving at the site. He said warning boards have been installed and local fishermen also caution visitors, but many tourists continue to ignore the advice.
