Heavy Rainfall Predicted Across Southern India

The onset of the southwest monsoon over Kerala is one of the most significant weather events of the year, as it signals the start of the rainy season that is crucial for agriculture,

After advancing steadily over parts of the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, the monsoon has reached Kerala and is expected to progress further into other parts of southern India in the coming days.

The development is expected to bring widespread rainfall to Kerala and its neighbouring regions which would provide relief to the residents from the pre-monsoon heat.

Delhi-NCR Likely to Witness Rain and Thunderstorms

According to the latest forecast of IMD, there could be very light to light rain along with thunderstorms and winds reaching 40-50 kmph in parts of the national capital during the afternoon and evening hours on today. The weather activity is expected to keep temperatures in check and provide relief from intense heat.
The IMD has also issued a yellow alert for Delhi and adjoining NCR regions, warning of rain and strong winds over the next two days. Similar weather conditions are expected over Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and western Uttar Pradesh.

The IMD has forecasted below-normal rainfall for the country as a whole this year, influenced by emerging El Nino conditions in the Pacific.

The monsoon rainfall was initially forecast by the IMD to be at 92% of the long-period average (LPA) for the season. This forecast was downgraded last week by the IMD to 90% of the LPA, prompting concerns over how badly the emerging El Nino would impact a pivotal season.Northern and central India continue to face severe heatwaves, making timely rains critical for farmers preparing for the sowing season.

While models can change with new data, the current picture suggests a gentle start to the monsoon followed by gradual strengthening.
