Disrespect of Sikh articles of faith in Mansa shameful: Giani Gargaj

Amritsar: Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Kuldip Singh Gargaj on Wednesday condemned the police action against protesters in Mansa and the alleged disrespect to Sikh articles of faith .

There are two parallel protests in Mansa — over the murder of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota and the alleged drug-overdose death of farmer Daljit Singh .

Giani Gargaj demanded action against police officers and cautioned Punjab Police and state govt that Sikhs would “neither forget nor tolerate such shameful and high-handed actions”. “Instead of protecting people, Punjab govt is subjecting them to police brutality,” he said, adding that people would respond appropriately at the right time.

Police should act against drug traffickers instead of targeting those demanding action against the drug menace, he said, adding that disrespect to turbans, unshorn hair (kes) and articles of faith of Amritdhari (initiated ) Sikhs was unacceptable.

He said Punjab’s drug problem was extremely serious and that tackling drug abuse and trafficking was the primary responsibility of successive govts but the present govt had “completely failed in this regard”.

The Jathedar appealed to Punjabis, justice-oriented organisations and individuals to join the Mansa protest in large numbers.
