DMK, TVK spar over flag near Periyar statue
Karur : Tension prevailed at Periyar Statue roundabout in Thirumanilayur on Thursday as DMK and TVK cadres had a heated exchange over installation of party flags during Periyar’s 147th birth anniversary observance.
TVK cadres had erected their flags near the statue. Around 8.30am, DMK leaders arrived and sought permission to install their flags. TVK cadres objected, saying they should garland the statue at the lighthouse roundabout, causing a brief scuffle and commotion. Police had made elaborate security arrangements at the roundabout.
Later, TVK organising secretary and former minister M R Vijayabhaskar , along with party functionaries paid floral tributes to Periyar around 9 10am. Cadres subsequently removed their flags from the roundabout and adjacent areas.
DMK cadres then installed their flags at the spot. Around 10 10 am, MLAs R Ilango and Chandran, and Karur corporation deputy mayor P Saravanan garlanded the statue, paid floral tributes and took a pledge of social justice .
