Engineers build simple fix for 70-year-old Land Rover safety flaw
Engineers have built a new system to fix an important problem, said to be affecting classic Land Rover Defender models. Car restorers at Helderburg have developed a new headlight system that will completely overhaul visibility on the popular SUV.
American-based Helderburg transforms and modernises classic Land Rover Defenders into luxury vehicles. However, the developers have now unveiled their next step with the new Helderburg Signature Headlight System.
According to Helderburg, the system is built to specifically address the classic Defender's historical "narrow-field" visibility issues. The project is part of an elite engineering collaboration with engineers who worked on lighting systems used by luxury brands like Rolls-Royce
Paul Potratz, Founder and President of Helderburg, explained: "We have engineered a proprietary optical system from the ground up that respects the Defender's heritage while providing a level of clarity previously impossible in a classic vehicle. This is not an LED retrofit; it is a declaration of identity and a commitment to engineering safety that outlives the original owner."
The brand has confirmed that their new headlight system will become standard equipment on all Helderburg commissions beginning in the summer of 2026. The new headlights are fitted with side beam projection technology that is said to expand peripheral vision behind the wheel.
They explained that classic Land Rover Defender models are known for their narrow forward-focussed beam patterns. However, they stressed this would not help to illuminate the edges of the road, which could become a major safety issue.
Wildlife and pedestrians could appear without warning, with road users unable to react until it is too late.
Helderburg added: "The edges of the lateral beam are carefully sculpted to avoid glare for oncoming drivers. This creates an expanded field of awareness without sacrificing courtesy or safety for others on the road.
"Whether traveling through wooded mountain roads at dusk or rural farmland at night, the improved peripheral visibility significantly increases driver confidence."
