Enraged Delhi locals thrash man after catching him sexually assaulting 6-year-old in Kishanganj
NEW DELHI: A 34-year-old man was arrested after local residents allegedly caught him sexually assaulting a six-year-old girl in central Delhi’s Kishanganj area on Monday evening, police said.
The accused, identified as Ankit, a resident of Kishanganj, was apprehended by local residents and handed over to police. A group of people, along with the child and her family members, reached the Shidipura police post around 6.30pm and informed officials that the accused had allegedly been caught while sexually assaulting the girl.
The incident triggered local outrage, with residents gathering outside the police station and demanding action against the accused. Enraged locals allegedly thrashed Ankit and his mother outside the police station, following which police intervened and dispersed the crowd.
The child was immediately taken for a medical examination, while police inspected the spot where the alleged incident took place and collected evidence. An FIR under relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was being registered, police said.
Police said statements of the child and other people aware of the incident would be recorded and the medical examination report would form part of the investigation. The circumstances leading to the alleged incident and the exact sequence of events are being investigated.
The incident comes amid a spate of cases involving alleged sexual offences against minors in Delhi.
On September 21, a 17-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by three men posing as policemen at a park near Kalkaji Mandir. On September 16, a minor girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by a 56-year-old man inside a shop in Sadar Bazaar. On September 12, a 16-year-old girl was allegedly raped and murdered in Swaroop Nagar.
Earlier, a nine-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted in Swaroop Nagar, while in Bawana, a three-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by a school-cab driver. Another four-year-old girl in west Delhi was also allegedly sexually assaulted by a school-cab driver, with a POCSO case registered in the matter.
