A new alert has been issued to millions of phone owners and it's not a warning to ignore. The latest caution affects Android devices, with anyone using this popular operating system now urged to check their settings and install the latest software updates. So why is this so urgent and why do Android users need to act? The alert comes after Google confirmed it has fixed swathes of security vulnerabilities in its software.

In fact, a whopping 124 vulnerabilities have been fixed in the release. If that wasn't bad enough, one of the flaws has been classified as a zero-day vulnerability. These vulnerabilities are considered especially dangerous because they are already known to cybercriminals and may be actively exploited before a fix becomes widely available.

According to Google, there are indications that the vulnerability, identified as CVE-2025-48595, may have been subject to limited, targeted exploitation.

"Multiple vulnerabilities were identified in Android," the security team at HKCERT explained.

"A remote attacker could exploit some of these vulnerabilities to trigger denial of service condition, elevation of privilege, remote code execution and sensitive information disclosure on the targeted system.

"CVE-2025-48595 is being scattered exploited. This vulnerability could lead to escalation of privilege with no additional execution privileges needed.

User interaction is not needed for exploitation."

While the company has not disclosed how many devices may have been affected, installing the latest security update is the best way to protect against potential attacks.

Google's Pixel smartphones are expected to receive the update first, with other manufacturers, including Samsung, likely to roll out the security patch to their devices over the coming days and weeks.

To check whether an update is available, Android users should open Settings, navigate to System Update, and look for any pending downloads.

Once the update has been installed, a device restart will required to complete the process.

Keeping Android devices updated with the latest security patches helps ensure protection against newly discovered threats and vulnerabilities.
