Fictitious names, gold hidden in shoes: DRI busts suspected gold-smuggling attempt in Delhi-bound bus, seizes Rs 2.76 crore haul in UP
LUCKNOW: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested two persons and seized nearly 2 kg of foreign-origin gold worth approximately Rs 2.76 crore from a Delhi-bound bus in Barabanki on Monday.
Acting on specific intelligence about gold being smuggled from Nepal through Uttar Pradesh to Delhi, DRI officers intercepted the bus on October 26 and apprehended the two suspects.

According to DRI officials, the accused had travelled from Siddharth Nagar to Basti, where they boarded the Delhi-bound bus. To avoid detection, they had booked their tickets using fictitious names.
During a search, officers recovered two bars of high-purity foreign-origin gold, weighing a total of 1.996 kg, concealed beneath the soles of shoes worn by one of the passengers.
The seized gold, valued at approximately Rs 2.76 crore, was allegedly being transported illegally from Nepal to Delhi through Uttar Pradesh.
Both passengers were arrested under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962, while the recovered gold was seized.
DRI officials said further investigation was underway to identify other members of the suspected gold-smuggling syndicate and establish the network involved in transporting the precious metal across the international border.
