HC takes note of TOI report, seeks report from Madhya Pradesh govt
JABALPUR/BHOPAL: Taking suo motu cognisance of a TOI report about how students, including five girls, from Vidisha's Kakraua village were risking their lives leaping over the pillars of a check dam on Betwa river to reach their school, MP high court (Jabalpur bench) Wednesday issued notice to chief secretary Ashok Barnwal and other authorities concerned, and sought a report.
The court's intervention came after the state govt, jolted into action after the TOI report, provisionally upgraded the village school into a high school and appointed two additional teachers.
The state counsel apprised a division bench comprising acting Chief Justice Vivek Rusia and Justice Pradeep Mittal that barricades have been installed on both sides of the check dam and a watchman deputed to ensure the safety of children.
HC was informed that a proposal to permanently upgrade the village school into a high school was already under consideration. However, the bench was not satisfied with state's submission and asked if two additional teachers were enough to cover all subjects in a high school.
Seeking a report, HC issued notices to chief secretary, principal secretary, PWD and the collector, before posting the matter for Sept 21.
The court appointed senior counsel Naman Nagrath and advocate Himanshu Mishra as amicus curiae and asked them to suggest whether a bridge should be constructed across the river or the check dam completed to make the said route safer.
