Delhi Man Faces Police Case for Allegedly Racially Abusing Arunachal Women; Calls It ‘Heat of the Moment’
In a case that has stirred national debate on racial sensitivity, Harsh Singh, a resident of Malviya Nagar in New Delhi, and his wife Ruby Jain have been booked by Delhi Police for allegedly racially abusing and intimidating three women from Arunachal Pradesh. The incident, widely shared on social media, has drawn sharp criticism and official condemnation.
The altercation unfolded on February 20 when the three women had called an electrician to install an air conditioner in their rented fourth-floor flat. Dust and debris from the drilling reportedly caused a dispute with Singh and Jain, who lived below them. The disagreement escalated into a verbal argument, during which the couple allegedly used racial slurs and derogatory remarks, including questioning the women’s character and making offensive claims about their profession.
A video of the confrontation, showing heated exchanges between the neighbours and the three women, quickly went viral, prompting widespread outrage across social media platforms and public figures alike. The Delhi Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Singh and Jain under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for criminal intimidation, outraging modesty, and promoting enmity between groups.
In response, Singh appeared in a video statement saying the incident was “in the heat of the moment,” expressing remorse and stating, “we are definitely ashamed.” He affirmed cooperation with the police investigation and said he would accept any legal consequences. Singh also appealed against what he described as a “media trial,” and appealed for restraint, while apologising to people from the Northeastern community.
The case has reignited discussions around racial discrimination faced by people from India’s Northeast in metropolitan areas. Leaders from the region and political figures have condemned the alleged abuse, highlighting the need for greater societal respect and legal accountability.
Delhi Police have recorded statements from both sides and are analysing video evidence as part of their probe. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the full facts behind the incident and ensure justice.
