According to police, the CIA Kharar unit received specific input around 8:20 AM regarding Rana’s movement. Rana was reportedly travelling from his village on a motorcycle when the police team intercepted him. Police officials said that Rana was asked to surrender, but instead he opened fire at the police party. In the retaliatory fire, the accused was shot in the leg and subsequently overpowered.

A pistol and motorcycle used by the accused have been seized. The scene was later examined by a forensic science team, which collected ballistic and other physical evidence.

SSP Mohali Harmandeep Hans stated that two accomplices of the accused had already been arrested earlier and the police were actively tracing Rana’s movements. “The accused was absconding in the firing cases. Today, he fired upon the police to evade arrest, following which the police retaliated in self-defence,” the SSP said.

A case under charges of attempted murder and provisions of the Arms Act has been registered against Rana at Kharar police station. The injured accused has been admitted to the civil hospital for treatment and remains under police custody. Further investigation is underway to determine whether the accused was linked to any recent extortion or gang-related activities in the region.
