SpiceJet Mumbai–Kolkata Flight Makes Safe Emergency Landing After Engine Issue
A major scare was averted when a SpiceJet aircraft operating from Mumbai to Kolkata made an emergency landing after a reported engine malfunction during descent at Kolkata airport on November 9. The airline has confirmed that all passengers and crew are safe, and the aircraft was evacuated without any difficulty.
According to airport authorities, the incident involved SpiceJet flight SG 670. The airline said in a statement that, “the aircraft landed safely and all passengers and crew deplaned normally.” The full emergency status was officially withdrawn at 11:38 pm after checks were complete.
This incident follows a similar case on September 12, when a SpiceJet Q400 flight from Kandla to Mumbai had to make an emergency landing at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) after an outer wheel was spotted on the runway post take-off. In that instance too, everyone on board escaped unharmed.
Meanwhile, passengers travelling to and from Delhi faced additional disruption as several airlines, including Air India, IndiGo and SpiceJet, reported delays due to a malfunction in the Air Traffic Control (ATC) system at Indira Gandhi International Airport. Carriers urged travellers to monitor their flight status and assured assistance on the ground to minimise inconvenience.
Airport officials confirmed that the technical glitch has now been resolved and normal operations have resumed.
SpiceJet has also been battling financial turbulence. The airline registered a consolidated net loss of Rs 234 crore in the April–June quarter, compared to a net profit of Rs 158.18 crore during the same period last year. The drop comes alongside a 36% YoY decline in operating revenue, linked to international airspace restrictions and reduced leisure travel due to geopolitical tensions.
Additional challenges such as delayed restoration of grounded aircraft and engine maintenance issues have further impacted overall capacity and performance.
