Language Bias In Bengaluru? Auto Driver Caught Overcharging Hindi Speaker- Watch!

A viral Instagram reel is reigniting the ongoing Hindi vs Kannada debate in Bengaluru, showcasing language-based discrimination among autorickshaw drivers. The video, with over 4.7 million views, features two women testing responses from auto drivers by speaking in Hindi and Kannada.

The experiment revealed striking disparities. While one woman, speaking in Hindi, faced rejection or inflated fares, her counterpart speaking Kannada often got more favorable responses for the same destinations. For instance, a driver quoted ₹300 for Indiranagar to the Hindi-speaking woman but dropped it to ₹200 when addressed in Kannada. Another driver outright ignored the Hindi speaker but welcomed the Kannada speaker.

Interestingly, not all drivers showed bias. A few charged the same fares regardless of the language, underscoring that exceptions exist. The women wrapped up their video with a message urging viewers to learn Kannada, hinting at the practicality of knowing the local language in Bengaluru.

The comments section of the reel buzzed with mixed reactions. Some users were outraged at the apparent regional bias. “Real heights of stupidity and discrimination happens only here,” one wrote. Others questioned the glorification of such disparities.

Comparisons to other cities quickly emerged. A user lauded Hyderabad for its inclusive auto services, while another praised Mumbai’s strict adherence to fare meters, irrespective of language. “Metre is a showpiece here?” quipped a viewer, contrasting Bengaluru’s scene with Mumbai’s no-nonsense approach.

The video shines a spotlight on a broader issue: the intersection of regional identity and urban mobility, sparking debates on inclusivity and fairness in everyday interactions.
