'Lover' Ashiq Ali in remand, gang rape charges, homestay staffer who supplied alcohol detained: What we know about GU student Nimisha's death case
GUWAHATI: A homestay employee has been detained and Gauhati University student Nimisha Thakuria ’s alleged lover Ashiq Ali has been sent to eight days’ police remand as Assam Police investigate the 22-year-old’s death at a homestay on the outskirts of Guwahati.
Police have detained Mintu Ali, an employee of the Dharapur homestay where Nimisha and Ashiq had stayed. According to police, Mintu facilitated their stay and allegedly supplied alcohol to them.
“We have detained him for questioning, and we are looking into all possible angles regarding the case,” said Balin Deuri, DCP (West).
Police have also registered a case against Ashiq in connection with Nimisha’s death and produced him before a local court on Monday. The court granted eight days’ police remand.
The case registered at Azara Police Station invokes Sections 127(2), 117(2), 70(1) and 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), relating to wrongful confinement, voluntarily causing grievous hurt, gang rape and murder, respectively.
Nimisha was found unconscious at the homestay on Saturday. She was taken to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Police have not disclosed the names of any other people allegedly linked to the case.
Social media accounts removedNimisha’s Instagram account was removed from public access on Monday following a request from her parents, who sought to protect her privacy during the investigation. Ashiq’s Instagram account was also removed from public access.
What CM Himanta said Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said investigators would examine statements Nimisha had made on Facebook and elsewhere regarding the incident, including references to phone calls, going home and coming to the homestay.
“I would only say that all of us should learn how to keep ourselves safe. And she is not a minor, she is an adult. So I think we should understand how we ought to conduct ourselves. We have certain values and traditions, and if we conduct ourselves within those values, society will remain in a better state,” Sarma said.
