Man takes pesticide at station; 2 cops suspended
Madurai : Two policemen were suspended after a 32-year-old man consumed pesticide on the premises of Kudankulam police station in Tirunelveli district on Thursday.
Rameshkumar of Kavalkinaru was brought to the station around 4.50pm by head constable Sivakumar and constable Veldurai to check whether he had been driving under the influence of alcohol. Police said the two personnel went inside the station to fetch a breathalyser while Rameshkumar remained on the premises. During their absence, he consumed around 10ml of pesticide that he had been carrying in his bag.
The policemen immediately took him to Kudankulam Government Hospital. He was later referred to Government Medical College Hospital, Asaripallam, for further treatment.
Tirunelveli superintendent of police Vishwesh Balasubramaniam Shastri subsequently ordered suspension of Sivakumar and Veldurai in connection with the incident. Police said an inquiry was underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.
