Once SFI bastion, ABVP set to win all 12 seats at Kerala govt Sanskrit college
KOCHI: The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad ( ABVP ) is set to win all 12 seats in the students’ union election at Government Sanskrit College, Tripunithura, after no candidates from other student organisations contested the polls. The college was considered a stronghold of the left-leaning Students’ Federation of India ( SFI ), which had controlled the campus union for more than three decades. However, the trend began to shift last year when ABVP won the union poll, defeating SFI candidates.
The college is affiliated with Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU), Kottayam, where students’ union elections are scheduled to be held on September 29. However, with the nomination process at the college concluding on September 18 without candidates from other organisations, ABVP has claimed victory in all 12 posts. The official results are yet to be declared.
“SFI has been winning at the campus for the last four decades. But when the nominations concluded on September 18, SFI could not find students to field in the election this year,” said Yadhu Krishnan, ABVP Kerala state secretary.
SFI Ernakulam district secretary Asish S Anand attributed the situation to a decline in student enrolment at the college following the Covid-19 pandemic. He said the institution currently has fewer than 100 students and was facing the prospect of closure.
“SFI had the campus union at the college for 36 years. But after 2020, enrolment at the college declined. ABVP used this situation to build a support base and claim that it has a students’ union at a campus in Kerala,” Anand said.
