Thiruvananthapuram : Private bus operators have withdrawn their proposed strike scheduled to begin on Tuesday, following discussions with transport minister C P John on Monday.

The decision was taken after a meeting between the minister and representatives of three bus operators' organisations — All Kerala Bus Operators Organisation , Kerala Bus Transport Association and Kerala State Bus Operators Coordination Committee — on Monday night.

Several demands raised by the operators were accepted during the discussions while govt agreed to consider some others sympathetically.

Govt accepted the demand to introduce private buses through a wet-leasing arrangement . It also agreed to simplify procedures for discontinuing bus services and transferring them to other operators.

The demand for revising bus timings in line with current requirements was also accepted.

Govt will sympathetically consider the operators' concerns regarding private insurance and their demand to treat bus services as an industry. The demand for extending the permissible operational lifespan of buses will be considered in accordance with the law.

A permanent committee comprising representatives of bus operators' organisations will be constituted to facilitate regular consultations between govt and the operators.

With govt agreeing to address several of their concerns, the operators decided to withdraw the strike planned for Tuesday.
