Protesters breach Gate No. 1 at Panjab University; over 2,000 storm inside
CHANDIGARH: The confrontation at Panjab University escalated sharply as Gate No 1 was breached on Monday afternoon, allowing a massive crowd to pour into the campus despite police restrictions. Between 2,000-3,000 protesters stormed the university after breaking through the main entrance, moments after a large group carrying Khalsa flags sprinted from the protest site toward the gate. A brief clash broke out with police before the barricades pushed way and protesters forced their entry. Police is now letting protesters inside. SSP Kanwardeep Kaur is also at the gate.

The Riot Control Police stood positioned just inside the gate, on standby mode in case of further escalation. With the gate breached, protesters continue to stream inside, shouting slogans and converging toward the protest site.
Former MLA Parminder Singh Dhindsa reached the university around the same time and entered from Gate No 1, after brief confrontation joining the demonstrators. Former MLA Harinder Singh Chandumajra, Anandpur Sahib MP Malvinder Kang and NSUI Punjab president Isherpreet Sidhu also arrived and made their way inside from the same gate. Several Punjab-based organisations’ representatives followed, swelling the gathering further.
The situation inside the university remains volatile, with police units repositioning after the breach. The protest, which started as a campus shutdown, has now turned into one of the largest and most forceful mobilisations at PU in recent years, with crowd movement intensifying and security stretched at multiple points. Authorities are monitoring the situation amid heightened tensions and the possibility of further flashpoints.
