Rs 12 lakh gold deal turns robbery: Fake cops assault jeweller, flee with cash in Navi Mumbai's Airoli
NAVI MUMBAI: A 47-year-old jeweller from Bhandup and his friend were robbed of Rs 12 lakh cash after being lured by two men who offered to sell gold biscuits at discounted price, but upon meeting near a restaurant in Airoli on Monday afternoon, three other men arrived at the spot in a MUV and posing as cops, they claimed that the gold biscuits were smuggled and were being sold illegally.
The trio fake cops assaulted the jeweller and his friend with wooden baton and forcibly confiscated the Rs 12 lakh cash from the jeweller, that he had brought along to buy the discounted gold biscuits.
Acting on a complaint by the jeweller identified as Dharmendra Patil, the Rabale police registered an FIR against the two men identified as Kantilal Kothari and Kisanlal Kothari, who had offered the bullion at discounted price along with an unidentified man, who had brought the gold biscuits at the meeting spot in Airoli and the three unidentified fake cops.
The police have launched a manhunt for the six accused.
The police have invoked BNS sections for robbery, cheating, personating a public servant, criminal conspiracy and joint criminal liability.
PSI Prasad Pawar of Rabale said, "Though the jeweller was robbed in our jurisdiction in Airoli, it was learnt that the criminal conspiracy bythe the accused was done for past three months at the jeweller's store in Bhandup. Hence, the zero FIR was registered at Rabale police station and transferred to Bhandup police on Tuesday."
As per the complainant Patil, the six accused plotted a criminal conspiracy from June 28, when the two accused Kantilal Kothari and Kisan Kothari lured him and his friend Gopal Pawaskar by offering to sell gold biscuits at discounted price of Rs 12 lakh.
Thereafter, on September 21, the duo Kothari called Patil and Pawaskar near Garam Masala hotel in sector 9, Airoli for delivering the bullion around 1.30pm.
During the meeting, Kotharis took Rs 12 lakh cash from Patil for counting, while an unidentified man who had brought the bullion was also present.
As pre-planned conspiracy, the three accomplices of Kotharis arrived in a MUV (Ertiga) and posing as cops and claiming that the gold biscuits sale was been done illegally, the trio fake cops attacked Patil and Pawaskar with wooden batons, threatened them of legal action and forcibly snatched the Rs 12 lakh cash along with a blank cheque book of the jeweller's wife in which some blank bearer cheques were signed and the trio fake cops sped away in the MUV.
