Rs 3.5 lakh debt, family dispute: Police save family of 4 from suicide bid on Fountain Bridge near Mumbai
MIRA ROAD: It was around 2am when a 28-year-old man stood on Fountain Bridge with his wife and their two young daughters, aged one and two, contemplating taking the extreme step.
A timely alert to the police control room and swift action by two beat marshals helped save the lives of all four.
At around 1.58am on Monday, the Mira-Bhayandar, Vasai-Virar police control room alerted Kashigaon police station that a man was allegedly attempting to end his life along with his wife and two children on Fountain Bridge.
Versova beat marshal No. 4, police havaldar Kokre and police constable Mohite, immediately rushed to the area and began patrolling the bridge and its surroundings.
At around 2.18am, they located the man and safely took him, his wife and their two daughters into custody, averting a possible tragedy.
During questioning, police learnt that the man worked as a delivery boy and lived with his family at Shanti Park in Mira Road East.
A few months ago, he had borrowed around Rs 3.5 lakh from his sister after pledging gold. With his financial condition worsening, his sister had been asking him to redeem the gold, sell it and return the remaining amount.
Police said the financial strain and the resulting family dispute had left him distressed, prompting him to contemplate taking the extreme step along with his wife and children.
The police then counselled the family and advised them to resolve the dispute rather than take any drastic step. His brother and sister were also counselled and asked to resolve the family issue at the earliest.
"The moment we received the information, the beat marshals were alerted and they immediately rushed to the spot. Their timely intervention helped avert a major tragedy. The family was subsequently counselled," said PSI Harish Patil.
What began as a late-night emergency call ended with four lives being saved. A swift police response, followed by counselling, helped bring a distressed family back from the brink of tragedy.
