Tarn Taran man caught with 3 grenades, AK-47

Amritsar: Amritsar rural police on Sunday claimed to have busted a cross-border arms and explosives supply network with the arrest of a 28-year-old truck driver and the seizure of an AK-47 assault rifle , nine live cartridges and two hand grenades from his possession.

Navjot Singh , a resident of Cheema village in Tarn Taran , was intercepted while riding a motorcycle, which was being used to transport the arms consignment, said police. A magazine was also recovered from his possession.

Punjab Police IG (border range) Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said the arrest was made on the basis of specific intelligence inputs and an investigation was underway to establish the assault rifle’s source and destination. “Special teams of Amritsar rural police intercepted the accused,” Bhullar said.

Police said a preliminary investigation indicated that Navjot was allegedly procuring illegal weapons on the directions of foreign-based smugglers . The operation was conducted under the supervision of SP (investigation) Ramandeep Singh, DSP Gurinderpal Singh Nagra and Attari DSP Yadwinder Singh, he added.
