UTTARKASHI: Authorities have prohibited trekking on routes above 4,000 metres in reserved forest areas of Uttarkashi district, including the popular Gaumukh-Tapovan trail in Gangotri National Park , following heavy snowfall in the higher Himalayan reaches.

The forest department has stopped issuing permits for these routes, citing hazardous conditions caused by snow accumulation.

Uttarkashi divisional forest officer Jeevan Mohan Dagade said, "Persistent snowfall in high-altitude areas had made the trekking routes unsafe. The department will not issue permits for trails above 4,000 metres until conditions improved." .

Gangotri National Park deputy director Mayank Garg said heavy snowfall on Oct 29 had left substantial snow accumulation along the Gaumukh-Tapovan trail, prompting authorities to restrict tourist and trekker movement as a precautionary measure. He said access would remain suspended until officials assessed the route as safe and formally reopened it.

However, Nelang Valley and Gartang Gali would remain open to tourists, Garg said, adding that the restrictions applied to the snow-affected trekking routes and not to all tourist destinations within Gangotri National Park.
