Video: Man's final moments caught on camera as 3 drowns in Lucknow river during Ganesh idol immersion
LUCKNOW: Three men drowned in the Sai river near Jabraila bridge in Mohanlalganj area of Lucknow while immersing a Ganesh idol on Tuesday evening.
The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) recovered the bodies of two of them, identified as Dheeraj (35) and Hariprasad (40), on Wednesday. The search for the third man, Pramod (22), is still underway.
The incident took place around 5 pm when residents of Sisendi village, located around five kilometres from the spot, reached the river to immerse the Ganesh idol.
According to officials, Dheeraj entered the deeper part of the river and began drowning. Hariprasad entered the river in an attempt to rescue him but also got caught in the current. Pramod subsequently entered the river, following which all three went missing.
Police and local divers reached the spot after receiving information about the incident. An SDRF team later joined the rescue operation with a boat, life jackets, ropes and other flood-rescue equipment. The search continued through the night with the help of floodlights.
On Wednesday, the SDRF recovered the bodies of Dheeraj and Hariprasad. Police sent the bodies for post-mortem examination.
The search for Pramod is continuing, with police personnel deployed at the spot.
Six local divers joined SDRF operation
Around six local divers also joined the SDRF team in the search operation. The SDRF reached the site about 40 minutes after receiving information about the incident. The team, led by SI Ritesh Sachan and comprising around 20 personnel, continued the search using a boat and rescue equipment.
ADMF, SDM Akash Singh and ACP RK Singh also reached the spot and spoke to the families and villagers gathered there.
The families had earlier expressed concern over the pace of the rescue operation, with some relatives alleging that nets had not been deployed in the river. Police officials assured them that the SDRF team was searching along the direction of the river’s current and that experienced personnel were involved in the operation.
Two victims’ wives pregnant
The tragedy has left the three families devastated. Dheeraj’s wife Anita, whom he married around two years ago, is about three months pregnant. Hariprasad’s wife Shyamawati is also pregnant. Hariprasad is survived by a 12-year-old son, Nihal, and a 10-year-old daughter, Niharika.
Pramod was a resident of Heera Khera, which falls under Sisendi village. The three men worked as labourers to support their families.
Large numbers of villagers and relatives remained at the riverbank during the night, awaiting news of the missing men.
