Young Som opts for the road less travelled in Slovenia
Panaji: Som Kumar could have easily opted for the comfort of Indian football after signing a four-year contract with Kerala Blasters FC in 2024.
Still a teenager, the youngster had made a name for himself playing for youth teams in Europe and invited interest from Blasters, where the club’s sporting director Karolis Skinkys called him “one of the highest potential players of his generation.” No wonder they bet big on him. Yet, after five appearances in the Indian Super League ( ISL ), Som decided to ignore the financial rewards and, in an unusual move, return to Europe where youngsters like him are paid a pittance.
