IIT Kharagpur Director Suman Chakraborty tells students: 'An exam is important, but it is not bigger than you'
Ahead of semester examinations, IIT Kharagpur Director Prof Suman Chakraborty has reached out to students with a message focused on academic pressure, mental well-being, and keeping examination results in perspective. He urged students to remember that a single examination reflects their performance on one day and does not determine their worth or future.

In his video message posted on IIT Kharagpur's X account, Prof Chakraborty asked students to approach their examinations with confidence while keeping the outcome in perspective.
He said an examination is important, but it should not become a measure of a student's identity or potential. He also acknowledged that even sincere preparation may sometimes result in a disappointing performance.
The director advised students not to treat one poor examination as a reflection of their overall ability. His message was particularly focused on preventing students from allowing an isolated academic setback to become a larger judgment about their lives.
‘A poor exam is not a poor life’
Prof Chakraborty reminded students that examination results can vary even when they have prepared sincerely. He encouraged them to accept an unexpected result without allowing it to overwhelm them.
He also asked students to trust the preparation they had put in and approach each question individually during the examination.
The director's message also stressed the importance of maintaining basic routines during the examination period. He asked students to get adequate sleep, eat properly, and look after their mental well-being.
Students urged to sleep adequately and support peers
According to Prof Chakraborty, preparation for examinations should not come at the cost of basic physical and mental well-being.
He advised students to get enough sleep to remain mentally stable and composed while appearing for their tests. He also encouraged students to help their friends remain positive, particularly when they notice someone struggling with examination pressure.
The message placed the focus not only on individual preparation but also on the role students can play in supporting one another during stressful academic periods.
‘Believe in yourself and remain honest’
The IIT Kharagpur director also urged students to remain confident and honest while appearing for their examinations.
He reminded them that setbacks are part of life and that a difficult academic experience does not have to determine what happens next. He said some of the strongest people are those who learn to recover after facing setbacks.
Prof Chakraborty encouraged students to believe in their ability to rebuild and move forward when things do not go as planned.
IIT Kharagpur Director asks students to seek help when overwhelmed
An important part of the message was his appeal to students not to deal with overwhelming situations in isolation.
He asked students to speak to someone if they found themselves struggling academically or otherwise. The director said students should not feel that seeking help is a sign of weakness or something they need to avoid because they are expected to remain strong.
He also assured students that they would not be alone while dealing with difficult circumstances and said the institute would stand with them. The central message was clear: academic performance matters, but it is only one part of a student's larger journey.
