NMC MBBS seat matrix 2026-27: 1.40 lakh seats approved, colleges warned against admissions beyond sanctioned intake
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has released the latest Undergraduate MBBS seat matrix for the 2026-27 academic year, excluding seats in Institutes of National Importance (INIs). The updated matrix covers 1,40,664 MBBS seats across 839 medical colleges, including government and private institutions. NMC MBBS seat matrix 2026: 1,40,664 seats across 839 colleges
According to the latest matrix, 1,27,028 MBBS seats have been renewed, while 13,636 seats have been increased for 2026-27.
The government medical college sector accounts for 64,121 seats, comprising 61,185 renewed seats and 2,936 increased seats. Private medical colleges account for 76,543 seats, including 65,843 renewed seats and 10,700 increased seats.
The latest figures represent an increase of 450 seats over the previous matrix, which had listed 1,40,214 MBBS seats. The number of colleges covered has also risen from 836 to 839.
NMC draws a hard line on excess MBBS admissions
The latest notice carries a direct warning for medical colleges. Institutions have been instructed to admit students only against the number of MBBS seats approved and notified by the NMC.
Any admission made beyond the approved annual intake will be treated as non-compliance with the provisions of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, and the regulations framed under it. Such institutions may face regulatory and penal action.
The direction also applies to counselling authorities. Admissions cannot be permitted against seats exceeding the number approved and notified by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB).
Seat matrix can still change before counselling
The NMC has clarified that the latest seat matrix is not necessarily immutable. It remains subject to revision based on decisions of the Appeal Committee or any other competent authority.
This means candidates should not treat a seat figure seen in an earlier version of the matrix as final. The latest NMC notification should be checked before and during the counselling process. The Commission has also directed counselling committees to refer any discrepancy or deviation in the approved matrix to MARB for clarification.
Medical colleges asked to report discrepancies
The NMC has asked medical colleges to carefully verify their institutional details and approved intake in the latest matrix.
If a college finds an omission or discrepancy, it has been directed to bring the matter to the notice of the President or Director, MARB, for examination and appropriate action, preferably before counselling begins.
The Commission has also reiterated that the approved intake must be followed strictly, leaving little scope for institutions to offer seats outside the sanctioned capacity.
