Odisha schools, Anganwadi centres closed till September 24 amid heavy rain
Schools and Anganwadi centres in several districts of Odisha have been closed amid heavy rain caused by a depression over the Bay of Bengal. The weather system is expected to intensify and bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to parts of southern and coastal Odisha.
Schools in Khurda, Jagatsinghpur, Ganjam and Gajapati are closed today, September 22. The Malkangiri district administration has announced that schools and Anganwadi centres will remain closed till September 24, according to PTI.
The closure has been ordered as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more heavy rainfall in the state.
Teachers to report to schools
Although schools have been closed for students, teachers and other staff will continue to report to their respective schools.
According to PTI, principals have been asked to prepare roster duties so that school buildings remain accessible around the clock. The arrangements are aimed at keeping the buildings ready for use during any emergency.
Anganwadi centres in the affected areas will also remain closed till September 24.
National Rural Talent Scholarship exam to be held
The National Rural Talent Scholarship examination, scheduled for September 22, will be conducted as planned at the designated examination centres.
The exam will not be postponed because of the school closures.
Teachers asked not to leave posting districts
The administrations of Koraput and Kalahandi have directed teachers not to leave their places of posting until September 25.
The leave of government employees has also been cancelled in Ganjam, Koraput and Kalahandi due to the prevailing weather conditions, PTI reports.
The government has also restricted vehicular movement on some roads, including Kalinga Ghat, which connects Ganjam and Kandhamal.
IMD issues red alert for several Odisha districts
The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in several parts of Odisha. A red alert has been issued for parts of southern Odisha for September 23 to 25.
Koraput, Gajapati and Ganjam are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, with extremely heavy rain at isolated places, on September 23 and 24.
Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Koraput and Malkangiri have also been placed under red alert for September 24 and 25.
The weather department has also forecast squalls with winds reaching up to 75 km per hour along and off the south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh coasts from the morning of September 23 to the evening of September 24.
Depression likely to intensify
The depression over the Bay of Bengal was located around 220 km from Gopalpur in Odisha and 320 km from Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, according to the IMD.
The weather system is expected to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a deep depression. It is likely to cross the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur during the night of September 23 and the early hours of September 24.
Odisha Chief Secretary Anu Garg said collectors of 11 districts had been put on high alert because of the rainfall forecast.
PTI quoted Garg as saying that cyclone and flood shelters had been kept ready and personnel had been placed on standby to deal with heavy rainfall. She also said that the IMD had forecast a deep depression, not a cyclone, this time.
IMD Bhubaneswar centre director Manorama Mohanty said rainfall had started in different parts of Odisha and was likely to continue until September 25.
